Who doesn’t like fries? Ever since we invested in an Air Fryer 5 years ago, we haven’t deep fried a single batch of fries at home. Truth be told, we are completely addicted to the air fryer version and why not? Less Oil = Less calories!

If you have recently purchased an Air Fryer, Fries are the best way to begin your air frying journey. Especially sweet potatoes as they do not require soaking (unlike regular potatoes) and turn out quite delicious.

Sweet Potato vs. Regular Potatoes

French Fries can be made using either of the two varieties of potatoes. They both turn out to be extremely delicious even when they are made in an Air fryer.

When making French Fries with regular potatoes, it is always best to soak in cold water to get rid of the starch (reason for soggy fries). In case of sweet potatoes, it is not necessary.

Sweet Potatoes are seasonal root veggie and a good source of complex carbs.

It is extremely difficult to say which is healthier. It is best to consume both varieties, in moderation.

Ingredients

Sweet Potatoes – I have used orange sweet potatoes. I have tried this recipe using purple sweet potatoes and Indian sweet Potatoes that have pinkish / light purple skin.

I have peeled the skin of the sweet potatoes. You can keep them but ensure you scrub it really well to get rid of mud particles stuck on the skin.

Spices – Kashmiri Red Chili (substitute with paprika or a mix of paprika and cayenne for heat), Garlic Powder, Turmeric and Black Pepper Powder.

You can experiment with spices – Cajun, Taco, Italian Herbs, Curry Powder or Garam Masala for Indian flavors etc.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil – You may also use Avocado Oil as it has high smoking point which makes it perfect for air frying.

How to Make Sweet Potato Fries in Air Fryer

Prepping the Sweet Potatoes – Scrub the sweet potatoes to remove any residual dirt or mud particles. Pat dry with a kitchen towel.

Peel the skin, cut the pointy ends of the sweet potatoes and further, cut them in half through the center.

Each half then can be sliced into 3-4 slices depending on the size of the sweet potato. Each slice can be cut into ¼ or ½ inch thickness for fries.

Seasoning – Add the fries into a bowl followed by spices and oil. Toss well ensuring each fry is coated.

Pre-heat the Air Fryer, brush / spray oil in the basket.

Place the fries in a single line and air fry. Remove the basket and shake once - twice in between for crispy texture and even cooking.

Once done, remove onto a serving bowl and serve with a dip of your choice.

Top Tips for Best Sweet Potato Fries in Air Fryer

Preheating – 2-3 minutes at 200 Degree Celsius (400 Degree F).

Always brush / spray oil in the air fryer basket. A tiny amount of oil helps as a protective layer and prevents food from sticking.

Prepping the Sweet Potatoes – Ensure the sweet potatoes are chopped uniformly. The cooking time will vary depending on thickness of the fries.

No Crowding – Crowding or adding everything at one go results in steam generation as it prevents the hot air from circulating. To avoid soggy fries, air fry in batches.

Shake the basket or turn the fries – For even cooking and crispy fries, always shake the basket once or twice between air frying.
