Why buy a pack of roasted peanuts from supermarket shelves when you can make them at home in just 10 mins?

With a variety of toppings or seasonings, this may just become one of your favorite snack to eat.

I swear I haven't gone back to roasting peanuts on stove-top. The best part about air fryer is once you get a hang of timing / temperature, the result is flawless!

Ingredients

Ingredients for roasting peanuts in air fryer - raw peanuts, kala namak and EVOO

Raw Peanuts / Peanuts without shell - Use raw peanuts will skin as they are best for roasting.

If raw peanuts have been sitting in your pantry for too long, it would be better to taste couple of them to check freshness. Nothing worse than air frying rancid peanuts.

How to Check freshness of peanuts? Raw peanuts have a nutty aroma. Stale or rancid peanuts will have a sour odor or may taste bitter. Also check for mold formation on the skin.

Kala namak / Rock Salt - Can be substituted with Himalayan pink salt, kosher salt, sea salt or table salt.

Oil or Ghee - While peanuts can be roasted without oil, some of it helps with even seasoning and elevates taste.

If making this for fasting, replace oil with ghee or clarified butter. Kala namak is the preferred choice of salt consumed during fasting.

How to make roasted peanuts in air fryer

Pre-heat the air fryer at 180 degree Celsius for 3 mins.

Into a bowl, add raw peanuts, salt to taste and oil. Mix well using a clean, dry spoon.

Once the air fryer is pre-heated, toss the peanuts into the air fryer basket.

Air Fry peanuts at 180 degree Celsius for 5 mins. Remove and shake the basket midway for even roasting.

Top tips to air fry peanuts

Depending on basket size, you can double the portion of peanuts added to the air fryer. Time required to roast will remain the same. However, shake the basket couple of times for even roasting.

Hot peanuts straight off the air fryer basket will not be crunchy. Allow it to cool slightly before tasting. Do not over-roast as it may burn.

If for some reason, the peanuts have not roasted to perfection, air fry for couple more minutes and it should be done. 

Timings may vary according to the model of air fryer used. Keep an eye.

How to use roasted peanuts?

Can be packed in snack boxes for kids and adults (unless allergic to peanuts).

Combine with dry fruits or nuts and seeds as trail mix. Energizing snack for camping, hiking and road trips.

Add to salads, stir fried veggies or chili garlic noodles, make fresh homemade peanut butter.

Roasted peanut chaat - spice up the roasted peanuts with chopped cucumbers, tomatoes, grated carrot, finely chopped onions. Top with lime juice, kala namak and fresh cilantro. Serve it with cocktails or mocktails for dinner party as appetizer or entrée.

Topping for Poha, Upma or Sevai (stir fried string hoppers).

Incorporate in dishes like Sabudana Vada, Sabudana Khichdi, Phodni Bhat (Maharashtrian Fried rice), Khamang Kakdi (peanut cucumber salad) etc.

Variations

While I have kept the seasoning simple, feel free to experiment. Some of my tried and tested options are given below.

Peri-Peri Spice - If you love a bit of spice-kick, you have to try this.

Cajun Seasoning - Absolute flavor blast.

Garlic Powder + dried herbs

Paprika + Lime - For smokiness, mild heat and a bit of a tang. Add the lime juice, just before serving.

Indian Spices (Turmeric, Black Pepper and Kashmiri red chili)

Storage Suggestion

Once the peanuts are cool, store them in an airtight jar in a cool dry place. Stays fresh for more than a week.

If you prefer peanuts without peel or skin, just rub a handful of roasted peanuts between your palms. The skin would fall right off. Do this near the kitchen sink to avoid mess and easy clean-up.

Do you wash peanuts before roasting?

No. Washing peanuts is not required.

How long do air fryer peanuts stay fresh?

When stored in an airtight container, air fryer roasted peanuts stay fresh for more than a month. Ensure the raw peanuts used for roasting are fresh.

Instructions
 

  • Pre-heat air fryer at 180 degree Celsius for 3 mins.

  • Once air fryer is pre-heated, toss the peanuts into the air fryer basket.
  • Air Fry peanuts at 180 degree Celsius for 5 mins. Remove and shake the basket once in between for even roasting.
  • Allow peanuts to cool before transferring to a clean, dry, airtight jar.

Notes
