Sweet Potato Fries in Air Fryer

After days of struggling with a dead broadband connection, I am back with yet another interesting recipe made in Air Fryer. Presenting Sweet Potato Fries – Crispy on the outside, soft centre, salty and delicious with a cup of tea!

These Sweet Potato Fries are so much better than the regular fries with potatoes. Also, bonus here is NO DEEP FRYING involved! These Fries are AIR FRIED with less oil.

Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries are excellent for fasting during religious festivals like Navratri, Janmashtami or Krishna Jayanti, Mahashivratri and also for Ekadashi, Shravan etc.

Some other Fasting Recipes that you can try from the blog are Air Fryer Sabudana Vada, Sabudana Khichdi and Rajgira Thalipeeth.

These fries can also be enjoyed with a vegetarian Kidney Bean Burger (Rajma Burger) as an after school snack for kids too.

Sweet Potato vs Potato

  • While fasting, the most common food consumed is potato fries or french fries.
  • Instead of using potatoes, I have used Sweet potatoes (good source of complex carbs) for the recipe.
  • I have also retained the skin of the sweet potato as they are an excellent source of fibre that keeps you full, especially during fasts.
  • However, both varieties of fries needs to be consumed in moderation.

The whole point of fasting is to eat mindfully, choose fresh instead of packed. Stay away from heavy food and let the body relax and repair for the day.

Post fasting, your skin should glow and you should feel light. Consuming heavy or rich foods throughout the day in the name of fasting deprives your body of its actual benefits.

I fast once a week and have been doing that since I was a school going kid. I consume variety of fruits, drink a glass of milk or seasonal fruit milkshake (without sugar). At the end of the day, I feel both fresh and relaxed!

Making these fries is extremely easy at home. I have also shared some tips, step by step images to make the process even more simpler.

Ingredients

  • 350 gms Sweet Potatoes
  • 1 tbsp Oil 1/2 tsp extra for brushing the mesh while preheating the Air Fryer.
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  • Lightly brush your Air Fryer mesh with oil.
  • Preheat for 8 to 10 minutes at 200 degrees.
  • In the meanwhile, wash, cut or chop the Sweet Potatoes (with skin) lengthwise and pat them dry to remove excess moisture.
  • In a bowl add some salt to taste and a tbsp of oil.
  • Mix well and then add the sweet potatoes.
  • Toss everything well and place them in the preheated Air Fryer.
  • Air Fry for 10 minutes at 200 degrees. Remove, toss them lightly and then Air Fry at 180 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes.
  • Repeat the process for the next batch. Serve them immediately with a cup of tea and/or ketchup.

Notes

  • I have retained the skin for its rich fibre content. It does taste well too. In case you do not like, peel the skin. Ensure you wash the sweet potato really well to get rid of the mud particles.
  • These fries taste best when hot. If they turn cold, toss them lightly with oil and Air Fry at lower temperature for 5 minutes until they crisp up. However, it could lead to burning of the edges due to over cooking.
  • You can make ahead, freeze the sweet potato sticks and then Air Fry them as required.
  • Ideally for fasting, sendha namak or rock salt is used. You can use regular salt to serve as tea time snack.

  1. These look yum. Does air fried food taste as good as fried ones? Just wanted to know, as many people are opting for an air fryer nowadays. Maybe I might think of buying one, if the food really tastes good in it!

    1. Hi Pooja, when you can enjoy most of the fried food with couple of tbsp of oil using an air fryer, you would definitely feel good! It has been a year since i am using an Air Fryer and it has been a great purchase. Personally, I am happy with the taste.
