Looking for an easy No cook, On-the-go healthy breakfast or a filling kid-friendly snack? Try this refreshing and delicious Strawberry Banana Milkshake with Chia Seeds made with fresh juicy strawberries, ripe bananas and NO Refined sugar.
I absolutely adore Strawberries and whip up this milkshake atleast once a week as my breakfast or evening snack, when fresh strawberries are in season.
Mind you, this Strawberry Banana Milkshake does not contain ice cream NOR it is garnished or served with whipped cream. It is a filling breakfast milkshake enriched with chia seeds, an ideal breakfast choice for busy days.
If you are like me who is hungry mostly during the second half of the day and wants to grab and eat anything that comes to sight, this milkshake is the best choice! It keeps me full (read less cranky) until dinner time.
Besides Alphonso Mangoes, Strawberries have my heart! In India, strawberries are in season during winters (December to February).
Mumbaikars like me make the mandatory yearly trip to Mahabaleshwar, a hill station situated in the Western part of India (Maharashtra State) where strawberries, mulberries and few other berries are locally grown.
Last year, I made Strawberry Jam with the fresh strawberries we purchased from Mahabaleshwar.
Strawberries sold in India usually comes from Mahabaleshwar. They are available up to February end until summers begin. Imported berries are quite expensive in India.
Coming back to the recipe, the Milkshake can be made with few or more ingredients. Like I always mention in most of my recipes, always open your refrigerator and find ingredients that you can easily use up.
Bananas are always available at home on the kitchen counter, in the fruit basket. Once it starts ripening, I peel the banana, chop into thick chunks and freeze them so that they don’t spoil.
How to Make Strawberry Banana Milkshake
Strawberry – Use fresh or frozen strawberries (based on availability)
Strawberries can be tart so please taste and adjust the quantity of honey or sweetener in the recipe.
Frozen Bananas – I have used 2 small Elaichi or Yelakki Bananas (small variety of banana and sweeter) that were peeled and frozen. You can use any variety of banana that is available in your supermarket.
Please note, it is not mandatory to freeze the bananas.
Chilled Milk – I have used Organic Cow Milk that has been boiled, cooled and refrigerated overnight.
You can use any nut milk or soy milk for a Vegan version of this milkshake
Chia Seeds – I have used the chia seeds directly while blitzing the ingredients instead of soaking the seeds and adding them to the milkshake.
Honey – Since we avoid refined sugar, honey is the next best thing to add especially when whipping up smoothies or milkshakes. Maple Syrup or Sugar can be used for a vegan recipe.
Like I mentioned above, I have kept this milkshake recipe as simple and basic as possible. My husband and I do not like excess sugar in milkshakes or smoothies nor enjoy ice cream or whipped cream as garnish. Hence, I have skipped both.
How Do I add Icecream?
Simply skip the milk and honey and add few scoops of ice cream. Vanilla Ice cream or Strawberry ice cream are great choices. It adds thickness to the milkshake but contains a lot of calories and sugar.
If you are not worried about excess calories, while serving the milkshake, you can add whipped cream and few chopped pieces of strawberries on top. This can be a weekend indulgence or a dessert treat once in a while
