Delicious 3 Ingredient Pomegranate Smoothie recipe made from freshly extracted homemade pomegranate juice. Healthy, dairy-free, vegan and contains no added sugar. Perfect way to start your day.
Perhaps you might have heard this many times - smoothies are the best way to include fruits in your diet. A life saver for busy mornings, they can be prepped a day earlier.
I prep and freeze fruits (including banana) during the weekend which makes it easier to just add them to a blender jar and drink up! Bonus - It's healthy!
Serve as breakfast, late afternoon snack or afterschool snack for kids. The smoothie is nut-free and totally customizable.

Ingredients
(1) Frozen Banana - I always stock frozen bananas in the freezer which is why making smoothies is a breeze in the morning.
Frozen Bananas add extra creaminess without milk or dairy. Also, if you use the right combo of fruits for your smoothie, you don't even need sugar or any sweetener for that matter. Natural sugars in fruits are best for health and needed for energy.
(2) Pomegranate Juice - Freshly extracted juice is used for the recipe. It also gives that lovely color to the smoothie.
If you are hard-pressed for time, use canned or tetra pack pomegranate juice. Look for organic brands that extract cold pressed juices without added sugar.
(3) Apples - Fuji or Gala Apples are best as they are sweet and less tart. Check farmers market or local supermarkets for sweet apple varieties and use what's easily available and in season.
Avoid Granny Smith apples as they are tart (unless you prefer it, of course).
You can also substitute Apples with Pears.
Peeling the Apples or Not? I prefer peeling the skin especially for smoothies.
I also have this constant fear of wax in apple skin which makes it harder for me to include peels.
Unless you have an apple tree in your backyard and / or have been gifted a bounty from friends, neighbors or relatives, would advise peeling.
I have not used any sweetener for this recipe. The fruits were naturally sweet.
However, feel free to add honey, maple syrup, agave, granulated sugar OR use dates if looking for natural sweeteners.
Step-wise Instructions
In a Blender Jar add all the ingredients (Banana, Peeled and cored apples, Pomegranate juice).

Blend until smooth and creamy. Serve immediately.

Pomegranate Smoothie Bowl
A delicious variation of this recipe is a Smoothie Bowl. You can blend the ingredients, add it to a bowl, top it with muesli, Granola, nuts and seeds, cacao, coconut chips, berries and enjoy a wholesome breakfast.

Pomegranate Smoothie Without Banana
If you don't like Banana in your smoothie, add fruits like Pears, extra portion of apples, Oats, nut butter, regular milk or dairy-free options like almond, oat and coconut.
Banana, especially ripe ones are naturally sweet and are perfect for those who are looking for sugar free smoothie options.
Variations
There are plenty of variations and that's perhaps the best part about smoothies.
Berries - Blueberries, Cranberries, Raspberries, Blackberry, Strawberry can be added. Keep in mind that berries are naturally sweet and tart so taste and add sweetener, if required.
Tropical fruits like Mango, Pineapple, Passionfruit, Lychee etc.
Citrus Fruits like Orange, Sweet Lime and Kiwi.
If you are planning to add dairy based milk to the smoothie, avoid adding citrus fruits as it curdles the milk.
FAQ
You can use fresh pomegranate juice or whole pomegranate seeds or arils in a smoothie. I prefer adding juice as smoothie might have some gritty bits of the seeds.
Berries of all kind - Blueberries, Cranberries, Raspberries, Blackberry, Strawberry.
Tropical fruits like Mango, Pineapple, Passionfruit, Lychee and citrus Fruits like Orange, Sweet Lime and Kiwi.
Both the fruits are available in fall / winter, making the combination a healthy and seasonal smoothie.

Pomegranate Smoothie Recipe (3 ingredients, no added sugar)
Equipment
- Blender
Ingredients
- 1 ¾ cup Pomegranate Juice about 400 ml
- 1 Banana medium size, frozen or fresh
- 2 Apples Gala or Fuji variety (peeled, cored and roughly chopped)
1 cup is 250 ml
Instructions
- In a Blender Jar, add frozen banana, peeled and cored apples and fresh pomegranate juice.
- Blend until smooth and creamy.
- Serve in a tall glass topped with pomegranate arils (optional)
Notes
- You may notice difference in color of the smoothie. The blender Jar has a visible pink color unlike the glass. This is because the smoothie contains apples and pomegranate juice and both have oxidative properties. The smoothie is perfectly safe to drink. It is just the natural tendency of the fruits.
- Fruit Juices are best consumed fresh. Would not advise storing this in the refrigerator.
- Since the recipe uses frozen banana, I have not added ice or chilled water.
