Easiest way to cook Baby Potatoes using Instant Pot. Steamed Baby potatoes are perfect to season with spices, serve as salad or side with meals.

Cooking Baby Potatoes in Instant Pot

Instant Pot is my go-to method for cooking Baby Potatoes. Super convenient, quick and perfect result every single time!

Who doesn't love baby potatoes or potatoes in general? A batch of cooked potatoes in the refrigerator is life saving.

Potatoes are versatile and can be added to anything ranging from soups, stews to rice dishes or turned to quick snacks as well.

There are many ways to cook Potatoes. Roasting, Air Frying, Boiling or Steaming, Baking and deep frying are some of the techniques.

While I have shared many recipes on the blog using Potatoes, today's method involves steaming the baby potatoes in an Instant Pot using a steamer basket. Easy and Simple!

How to Cook Baby Potatoes In Instant Pot

Step 1 - Add 1 - 2 cups water in the steel pot insert and place the trivet.

For 6 Qt Instant Pot, add 1 cup water and for 8 Qt, use 2 cups.

Place the steamer basket on the trivet and add the rinsed potatoes.

The steamer basket that I have used is a foldable one. It does not have legs for support, hence needs to be placed on a trivet.

Placing the steamer basket on the trivet actually prevents direct contact with water while pressure cooking, keeping the potatoes nice and dry.

Step 2 - Close the lid, pressure cook the potatoes. Once the pressure is released naturally, open the Instant Pot lid.

Use a fork to pierce the potato. If the center is uncooked, cook for extra couple of minutes until done.

For making sabzi or stir fries, peel the skin once its completely cool.

Recipe Ideas to use Steamed Baby Potatoes in IP

Make crispy Potato Roast - A South Indian Style stir fried potato recipe with mustard seeds and curry leaves. Pair it with Sambar or Rasam or serve with Curd Rice.

Potato Salad with homemade Vegan Pesto Sauce.

Smashed Potatoes is our all time favorite snack using steamed baby potatoes. Perfect appetizer for entertaining. Serve with any dip of your choice.

Potato Tikka (similar to paneer tikka) on skewers are perfect for vegetarians / vegans during bbq season.

Serve as SIDE with Green Beans, Carrots and Brussels Sprouts

Whilst the potatoes are warm, toss them in a mixture of butter, garlic powder, black pepper, fresh herbs and salt. It tastes heavenly.

Turn it into a SHEET PAN DINNER with cauliflower, broccoli, asparagus, paneer or protein of your choice and some chickpeas for crunch. Serve with Soup OR Garden Salad.

Storage

I usually bulk cook and store potatoes in an airtight container under refrigeration. It stays fresh for 5-6 days. In summer, the shelf life is shorter.

If you are expecting guests at home or have a large gathering of people for Sunday lunch, you can peel and freeze a batch of baby potatoes to make quick potato roast.

Peeling the potatoes is not mandatory. However for sabzi or stir fry, we prefer peeling the skin as it tends to absorb the spices and oil better.

Tip - If you find this task cumbersome, plan it while catching up your favorite shows on tv.

  • On the trivet, place the steamer basket and add the rinsed, drained potatoes.

Notes

  1. I have used my 6 Qt. Instant Pot. While I have only steamed 500 grams or half a kilo or baby potatoes, the steamer basket can hold 1 kilo of baby potatoes. Cook time remains unchanged.
  2. After placing the trivet, For 6 Qt Instant Pot, add 1 cup water and for 8 Qt, use 2 cups.
  3. The steamer basket that I have used is a foldable one. It does not have legs for support, hence needs to be placed on a trivet.
  4. Placing the steamer basket on the trivet actually prevents direct contact with water while pressure cooking, keeping the potatoes nice and dry.
  5. Even though active cooking time is 5 mins, it takes a while to build pressure in the Instant Pot. Passive time includes time taken for natural pressure release which is approximately 15 minutes.
  6. Once the potatoes have cooked, check doneness by using a fork or toothpick. If the center is uncooked or hard, close the lid and pressure cook for 2-3 mins, followed by QPR.
  7. For making sabzi or stir fries, peel the skin once its completely cool OR comfortable enough to handle.
Storage -
  • Cooked baby potatoes, once cool, can be packed in an airtight container and stored in the refrigerator for 5-6 days (depending on weather conditions).
  • If you are expecting guests at home or have a large gathering of people for Sunday lunch, you can peel and freeze a batch of baby potatoes to make quick potato roast.
  • Peeling the potatoes is not mandatory. However for sabzi or stir fry, we prefer peeling the skin as it tends to absorb the spices and oil better.
