Fruit Chaat | Easy Indian Fruit Salad Recipe

Fruit Chaat Recipe is a Healthy Indian Fruit Salad made with mixed fruits and assorted spices. This assorted bowl of fruits can be served as an appetizer or snack especially during summers. Made without any cream or custard, this assorted fruit bowl is a healthy way to include more fruits in your diet.

Are you someone who struggles to eat a portion of fruits everyday? Or you find it boring to munch on an apple anytime you feel peckish? This Fruit Chaat is great for satisfying post-meal dessert cravings or a perfect pick-me-up at 4pm instead of caffeine.

Fruit Chaat is a great way to use up leftover assorted fruits sitting pretty in a bowl on the kitchen counter. Post festivals, I love making this chaat to use up all the fruits and frankly it is far better than baking a cake.

All it takes is some seasonal fruits and spices that can be easily sourced from Indian grocery stores. A quick mix and you are ready to serve!

Ingredients & Instructions

There is no set protocol on the quantity of fruits to be used. If you are looking to clear your fruit bowl, do so by all means! The Fruit Chaat recipe is quite forgiving. Easily customizable according to availability of ingredients.

Any 3-4 variety of fruits can be used. Use fresh fruits and avoid canned stuff as they are loaded with sugar.

I have used Apple, Guava, Black Grapes, Banana, Strawberries and Pomegranate.

I stock a container of pomegranate pearls in my refrigerator since we include it in salads or smoothies. You can refer to this Post on How to Make Pomegranate Juice which includes tips on cutting and removing the pearls easily.

You can add a variety of berries, pear, mango, peach and pineapple. Use fruits with a combo of sweet and tart.

In case of citrus fruits like sweet lime and oranges, it is best to segment and add them. Avoid the white pith or seeds.

It is important to chop or dice the fruits uniformly - bite size pieces. I always cut the grapes in half and quarter or halve the strawberries. Berries can stain the other fruits (which I totally am ok with)

Spices - I have used Amchur (Dry Mango Powder), Chaat Masala Powder, Roasted Cumin and Black Pepper. Instead of using regular salt, I have used Rock Salt.

Most Indian Chaat recipes call for the above spices. These can be added to other recipes as well and it won't be a waste (especially, if you are trying it for the first time).

For eg, Amchur is a great replacement for lime juice and can be added to steamed broccoli, sprouts, in chickpea salad or sprinkled on boiled or roasted potatoes too.

Roasted Cumin can be added to salads or used in curries or gravies.

These spices are available in Indian Grocery stores or can be ordered online. I make most of the spices at home, from scratch.

Serving Suggestions

Fruit Chaat can be served as a light appetizer for potluck parties, game nights or summer picnics. These can be made when hosting parties and catering to a large crowd.

The chaat can be served in store bought tart shells garnished with fresh mint leaves. Your guests will go crazy and you don't even have to slave in the kitchen putting it up.

I like adding boiled potatoes or sweet potatoes to the chaat as a variation. Street Vendors in India, especially in North India add sweet potatoes to fruit chaat during winters.

I like adding some sprouts, cucumbers or cooked beans like Chickpeas during summers to turn it into a light afternoon lunch.

Storage Suggestions

This is most often a make and serve salad at home. I rarely have leftovers.

If making ahead the salad, you can keep the chopped fruits covered with a cling film or store in an air tight container.

I would reserve adding citrus fruits, apples and pears (fruits that oxidize) until guests arrive.

You can carry this salad to work. Just pack the fruits and the dry spice mix separately. When you are ready to eat, mix well and enjoy!

FAQ's

Can Fruit Chaat be made ahead?

Yes, it can be easily made ahead. However, fruits like pears and apples tend to oxidize, hence, such fruits can be included just before serving.

Is Fruit Chaat healthy?

Eating everything including fruits in moderation is healthy. Having said that, fruits are high in natural sugars so one should be mindful of quantity consumed.

  • ½ teaspoon Chaat Masala Powder
  • ½ teaspoon Roasted Jeera Powder
  • ¼ teaspoon Black Pepper Powder
  • Sendha Namak or Rock Salt as per taste
  • Mint Leaves finely chopped, about 1 & 1/2 tablespoon

1 cup is 250 ml, 1 tablespoon is 15ml and 1 teaspoon is 5 ml

Instructions

  • In a wide mixing bowl, add all the chopped fruits.
  • Now add the roasted cumin powder, black pepper powder, amchur powder, chaat masala powder and rock salt.
  • Toss gently. Note - If you are using fruits like strawberries, it will stain the other fruits so if you don't prefer that, reserve adding it until the end.

  • Before serving, garnish with finely chopped mint leaves.

Notes

  • Mixed Fruits Used - Apple, Guava, Black Grapes, Banana, Strawberries and Pomegranate pearls.
  • If you prefer adding lemon juice, add it just before serving. You can adjust the quantity of amchur powder accordingly or the salad would taste too sour.
