Summer Friendly Onion Raita Recipe - Easy Indian Side Dish for Pulao, Biryani. Can double up as a dip for starters or appetizers like Kebabs and Cutlets

Onion Raita Recipe | Side Dish for Biryani Pulao

Easy Onion Raita recipe for Biryani Pulao. Made with 5 ingredients, this pyaaz raita is an easy Indian condiment, side or accompaniment ready in 15 mins.

Indian raita is served as side with main course rice recipes, paratha etc. It can be served alongside spicy curries and naan or roti. It is made with raw or cooked veggies and / or fruits, herbs.

We make onion raita frequently in summer. Onion has a natural tendency to cool the body.

In South India, Onion raita is served as accompaniment with Poori-Masala, Malabar Parotta and Kurma, Stew and Appam etc.

Onion is always available in an Indian pantry so it takes literally 15 minutes to make raita. Perfect to serve while planning any Indian dinner party.

Onion Raita Recipe

Curd or Yogurt - Use chilled, fresh and thick curd for this recipe. I set curd or yogurt at home. You can use store bought yogurt or Greek Yogurt for this recipe.

Vegans can use any Vegan variety of yogurt easily available in supermarkets.

Onion - They are sliced or cut as "half moons". This is how we prefer at home. You can finely chop the onions, if you like.

You can use either red or white onions. We prefer the red ones. You can also use shallots or madras onions (also known as pearl onions) for this recipe.

Green Chilies + Cilantro or fresh Coriander - If you don't prefer heat, de-seed the green chili pepper.

You can also use jalapeno peppers (de-seeded) instead of regular green chilies.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups Curd, Yogurt or Dahi use fresh curd
  • 2 Onions medium size, sliced or cut as half moons
  • 1 Green chillies finely chopped
  • Finely chopped cilantro or coriander
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  • Whisk the curd or yogurt with some salt.
  • Add the sliced onions, chopped green chilies and cilantro or coriander leaves.
  • Mix Well and serve immediately.

Notes

  1. Curd or Fresh Thick Yogurt - Should be chilled, fresh and thick. Since onions tend to release some moisture after it's added to the curd, ensure the yogurt is not diluted with water. I have used home made yogurt. You can use store bought Greek Yogurt or any Vegan curd of your choice.
  2. Onions - Use any variety you like or easily available in your pantry. We prefer the red ones. You can also use shallots or madras onions (also known as pearl onions) for this recipe.
  3. Green Chilies - If you don't prefer heat, de-seed the green chili pepper before finely chopping them.
  4. This Raita is best consumed fresh. Leftovers can be stored for a day (under refrigeration). It tends to release a lot of moisture as it sits. Add extra thick curd or yogurt, if you feel the raita appears diluted.
