Potato Mint Raita / Aloo Pudine ka Raita
Summers beckon us. It’s time to start treating our body with cool foods / drinks and ensure it stays hydrated and active. While the appetite takes a sudden dip (you feel thirsty more than hungry), eating the right kind of foods are important too else you feel fatigue and tired pretty soon. So, I bring to you a delicious and easy to put together cooling Raita called Potato Mint Raita or Aloo Pudine ka Raita.
Raitas are and will be a regular feature at home in our 2 main meals the entire 3 or 4 months of summer in Mumbai. Sadly during summers, the stomach takes a great toll due to the humidity, irregular meals and dehydration. Eating curds, hence, becomes a necessity to keep the gut clean leading to smooth and supple skin during summers, which by the way is the most to get hampered too due to harsh weather.
Extreme heat during summers cause skin irritation, darkening and not to worry loads of pimples etc esp with teenagers. The only solution, rather the safest solution is to make curd a part of your daily diet (atleast once for starters). Say bye bye to all those expensive creams etc that guarantee you a blemish free skin. Curds would just do the trick. By the way, apply curds on your hair and give it a good rinse to ensure silky shiny hair too. One of the best conditioners you can get. The same curd when mixed with gram flour and applied on skin before a bath is probably one of the most underrated yet guaranteed super skin scrub probably what your grandmother had been using and has been advising you to do the same too.
Now, the problem lies in monotony. How can you have dahi every single day? Turn it into a raita, throw some veggies, fruits, nuts and just see that boring lunch turn interesting within no time. Potato Mint Raita is my go to Raita during summers as its extremely cooling. Generous quantity of chopped mint with cubed or diced boiled potatoes, a bit of home made roasted cumin powder, some Himalayan pink salt (I am crazy about it currently) and a cool bowl of curd is just what I would happily dig into with my rotis or dal chawal.
By the way, don’t throw those potato peels.. they are great for your under eye bags or rubbing on your skin if it is severely tanned during summers. Now this is what I call making full use of the ingredients.

Recipe for Potato Mint Raita / Aloo Pudine ka Raita
- Boiled and cubed potatoes – 1 cup
- Few mint leaves – finely chopped
- Curd – 1 cup
- Roasted Cumin powder – ½ tsp
- Himalayan Pink Salt – ½ tsp
- In a bowl, add the boiled and cubed potatoes along with salt and cumin powder.
- Whisk the curd well and add it over the mixture of potatoes.
- Add finely chopped mint leaves and mix everything well.
- Refrigerate it until you serve.
- The curd should be fresh, thick and not at all tangy.
- You can add pomogranette pearls too to the raita.
- Sprinkle some cumin powder before serving. You can add some chilli powder too, if you like. I avoid that during summers though.
- I have used Himalayan Pink Salt which is extremely healthy but you can use Kala Namak / Rock Salt / Sea Salt or your basic table salt.
